內容簡介The effort to conserve energy and reduce burden to the environment has prompted search for alternative heating methods to conventional gas, oil, and electric furnaces for sintering ceramics including refractories. A promising alternative is heating by electromagnetic wave that has been widely used in microwave ovens for heating foods in stores and homes. Industrially, microwave heating has helped shorten the time for drying wood, foods, rubber, and green bodies of ceramics. Investigation of microwave heating of ceramics started in earnest in the 1970s using the same 2.45 GHz microwave that heats microwave ovens. Early studies concluded that, since the depth of penetration of microwave is proportional to their frequency, 2.45 GHz microwave could only heat and sinter small pieces. As a result, the focus of the study shifted toward higher frequency microwaves. 28 GHz microwave in particular, which has been studied by many researchers in Japan as well as in other countries~1. On the other hand, the effort to put 2.45 GHz microwave sintering in practice continued, and a patent was filed about three years ago for an invention to fire china with 2.45 GHz microwave~2. This has given a new impetus to the study of 2.45 GHz microwave. We used the 2.45-GHz microwave heating technique in order to design and build a microwave furnace, and tested its capability to sinter refractories and an alumina ceramic. The results are described in this report.
