內容簡介The International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) issued a statement on December 20, 2004, indicating that the world production of steel would exceed one billion tons for 2004, for the first time in history (Postscript - On January 19, 2005, IISI announced that the world production in 2004 officially reached 1,054.6 million tons). Their projection was extrapolated from the production figures at the end of November, 2004, when the accumulated production had already reached 945.2 million tons, which was more than the annual production in 2003; the average daily production of 2.8 million tons was expected to continue through the end of 2004. It is expected that the annual production in 2005 will also be more than one billion tons. The calendar year steel production of the world during the last decade was included as an appendix to the announcement; the only data included for a single country were the steel production figures for China. This example includes dual symbolism, meaning (1) the arrival of the "one billion ton age" and (2) the beginning of "The China Age". It required about 25 years from the time 7000 million tons of steel were produced in 1974 until 8000 million tons were produced. But it took only five years to go from 8000 million tons to one billion ton. With an increase of about 250 million tons during the last decade, China played a very important role in the growth, with their increase in steel production from 93 million tons in 1994 to 220 million tons in 2003, while the world total went from 720 to 970 million tons during the same period (see Fig. 3: based on IISI data).
