Adding low thermal expansion materials containing zirconia such as alumina-zirconia or zirconia-mullite is considered one of the most effective methods to improve the spalling resistance of sliding nozzle plates (SN plates). Zirconia containing materials change their crystal structure at about 1000 deg C creating a volume change in the refractories, and this volume change is generally considered to improve the spalling resistance of refractories. We investigated the influence of zirconia containing materials on the microstructure of refractories and the spalling resistance of SN plates. We found that higher the monoclinic zirconia content in raw materials resulted in larger volume change in the refractories. Consequently, the formation of microcracks in the microstructure will be increased. Microcracks lower the elasticity of the refractories resulting in an improvement in the spalling resistance of the SN plates. On the other hand, microcracks- will also lower the strength of the SN plates at the same time. Therefore, we believe it is necessary to select appropriate zirconia containing materials to control the amount of microcracking and improve the total performance of the refractories.
