Since then, the converter has been changed into a compound furnace in which scrap melting and decarburization are repeated separate from the conventional decarburization furnace. The vessel life of the converter was gradually increased from 2500 to 3900 heats (+56%), but a further increase was not possible because of excessive brick wear in the bottom corner area*. To overcome this problem, a new method of installing bricks was devised for the round corner lining, which was different than the conventional horizontal method of laying bricks; this change resulted in good performance. This paper reports on the analysis, development, and performance of the new lining scheme.
